Personal Learning Networks and Digital Identity

ā€¢ What does it mean to network using social media?

ā€œIn our PLNs, we learn what we want to learn using the vast resources and people online (or off) that can help us learn it. Each of our networks is unique, created and developed to our personalised learning goals that evolve and grow throughout our lives.ā€

Social media is the opinions, main experiences, opinions and platforms shared between people. Therefore, we can use this media technology to enhance the quality of learning with the Internet by promoting opportunities for the use of resources and services, as well as long-distance communication and cooperation. Provide us with a connection with a new world full of learning resources.

ā€¢ How are we motivated to participate in networked publics?

In our understanding, the skills at the centre of networking involve an ability to identify and understand other peopleā€™s work in relation to oneā€™s own, and to assess the value of the connection with these others for potential future work. The result of networking is a personal professional network, i.e., an egocentric, personally and intentionally created network of people set up by an individual specifically in the context of her professional activities. This network gathers a heterogeneous circle of people, distributed across different groups and places, and connected to the individual with connections of varying degrees of strengths (Granovetter, 1983; Nardi, et al., 2000).

In today’s society, while the Internet promotes the progress of the public society in its own unique way, it also brings a new breath to public participation in practice. It can promote personal opinions and create unlimited space. That is to say, the rapid development and wide application of the Internet can help Public participation in life provides a convenient and efficient platform.

ā€¢ What are the risks & rewards of public communications?

Professional networking offers various benefits. From the individualā€™s perspective, it supports the development and growth of professionalsā€™ careers (Cross, et al., 2003; Dulworth, 2006; Krattenmaker, 2002).

The essence of the network is resource sharing, so it provides multi-level, multi-faceted, multi-angle communication and cooperation for some people in need, and can also appropriately express their views and absorb other people’s reasonable ideas.
However, the resources on the Internet are also harmful. For example, we are now in a Covid-19 environment. Due to some untrue messages, some people received the wrong messages and did some wrong things.

ā€¢ What is a digital identity?

I think digital identity is the embodiment of peopleā€™s identity information on the Internet, so that they can be used to communicate on the Internet.

ā€¢ How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?

An individual’s digital identity is formed by an individual through participating in network activities. From a social perspective, a digital identity can become the second business card for people to communicate with each other. From a broader perspective, a person’s digital identity also contains his personal data and personal information. As a product of the era of big data.
Digital identity can be regarded as the cornerstone of digitalization in various fields, whether it is government governance, public services, or medical, telecommunications, finance, etc., they are closely related to it.

ā€¢ How do digital identities converge in networked publics ā€“ what are the impacts and/or benefits?

In the digital age, more and more companies regard “data” as their core assets, new resources and new wealth. Digital identity is a key part of network security and an important protective barrier for corporate website data. For individuals, a digital identity can better let people know you and trust you.

I completely agree. The pandemic has really shown a light on the limited understanding and access people have to digital identifies. In my opinion, these differences created through socio-economic and geographical differences/disparities. When the pandemic hit and classes were cancelled in parts of Canada, families that were not able to afford devices were left to flounder as learning went online. Those living in remote and rural areas with incredibly poor interent service were left disconnected. The world is clearly moving more and more aspects of life online and governments need to support their populations, if those governments intend to modernized their digital infrastructure.

    Hello Allen!

I appreciate the fact you took note of, in the wave of Covid 19, the false information that’s broadcasted and the negative effects. This can be said with so many topics nowadays as extremists are so avid in posting things that younger demographics can easily fall victim to.

I also agree with you that our digital identities can allow others to better know and trust us! I for one, always find myself after meeting others reaching out online, and through seeing their social media I find myself better understanding and as you said “trusting” them. Which honestly, is so weird we do this as how can we trust people we just meet, but it’s true!!

    Great post!

    Hi Allen!

Itā€™s interesting when you talk about the digital identity. ā€œFrom a social perspective, a digital identity can become the second business card for people to communicate with each other.ā€ In now days, people tent to use internet often, we like to chat online and share stories. However, I think it is unsafe to share personal information online. We never know who is behind the other computer. However, digital identity makes our life easier.

    Interesting post!

I agree with the idea that PLN essentially is about sharing resources. Before the internet was invented people found it hard to express themselves and find others with common interests with themselves. However, social media today provides us with such a platform where we are free to share any resources such as pictures, videos, articles to others and exchange resources from others.
